Vaccination

At this time we are offering the HIN1 vaccine at all of our medical centers.  Anyone may receive the vaccine; however the following groups are strongly encouraged to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

a. Pregnant women         

b. Persons who live with or care for infants younger than 6 months of age         

c. Healthcare and emergency personnel         

d. Anyone from 6 months through 24 years of age         

e. Anyone from 25 through 64 years of age with any of the following conditions:

  • chronic pulmonary (including asthma), cardiovascular (excluding hypertension) renal, hepatic, cognitive, neurological/neuromuscular, hematological, or metabolic (e.g., diabetes) disorders
  • immunosuppression (including that caused by medications or HIV)
  • long-term aspirin therapy.

The following groups may be vaccinated after the initial priority groups:                  

  • Healthy 25-64 year olds                   
  • Adults 65 and older   

What is H1N1 (Swine Flu)?

H1N1 is a virus that causes disease in pigs.  In April 2009, the disease was reported to have spread to humans.  The virus is spread mainly through coughing or sneezing by people with the flu.  It can also be spread by touching something with the flu virus on it, then touching your mouth, or nose, or eyes.

 

What are the Symptoms?

If you have a fever with cough and/or sore throat and muscle aches, you may have the flu.

 

Adult Warning Signs

(If you or a loved one has these symptoms, please go to the Emergency Room)

In addition to the usual flu-like symptoms, adults may have other signs and may need to go to the Emergency Room. Those signs are:

1.    Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath

2.    Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen

3.    Sudden dizziness

4.    Confusion

5.    Severe vomiting or vomiting that does not stop

6.    Fever and cough and/or sore throat which may go away and come back worse than before.

 

Children Warning Signs

(If your child has these symptoms, please go to the Emergency Room)

1.    Fast breathing

2.    Bluish skin color

3.    Not drinking enough fluids

4.    not urinating enough

5.    no tears

6.    Not waking up

7.    Not interacting

8.    Being extra irritable

9.    Do not want to be held

10. Fever and cough and/or sore throat which may go away and come back worse than before

11.   Fever with a rash


Prevention

To prevent the spread of the virus:

  • Wash hands often
  • Avoid close contact; stay away from crowds
  • Stay home when you are sick
  • Cover your mouth and your nose when coughing or sneezing
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
  • Get plenty of sleep
  • Be physically active
  • Manage your stress
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Eat nutritious foods
