Mobile Medicine Will Increase Access to Health Care
in South Jersey
It has been some time since we witnessed such excitement
from local citizens, elected officials, community-based organizations
and agency representatives about something in health care.
In this case, it is good news!
Southern
Jersey Family Medical Centers, Inc. recently held an“open
house” in both Burlington and Atlantic Counties to introduce
our new “Mobile Medic” units for our service areas.
There seemed to be honest excitement about the possibilities
of bringing medical services to areas where medically underserved
patients need it most.
The anticipation of scheduling the “Mobile Medic”
to make local “calls” to community agencies and
schools must have reminded people of the day when doctors
actually made house calls. I believe that the warmth and anticipation
people feel about the concept of a clinician actually coming
to them seem to suggest that humanism can still be exhibited
in the medical profession. Humanism is an emotion that seems
to have been lost in recent years in the medical profession.
We are trying to get it back!
Southern Jersey Family Medical Centers’ mission and
history is embedded in providing services in medically underserved
areas, including outreach and health education services to
migrants families, seasonal farm workers and others on more
than 150 farm camps in South Jersey.
We
share the excitement of others as our two new Mobile Medic
units move into communities to address medical needs of children
and families. The medical and dental needs in our target areas
are great and we hope to address many of them with our new
service component.
Mobile medicine is not a new phenomenon. Mountainous and
rural communities have used mobile vehicles to deliver health
care decades. In some areas, mobile medicine is the only medical
care families receive.
